It really works November 23, 2008 This attractive little gadget really is simple to use and its picture quality is better than that of its competitors.
A larger screen would be nice (but perhaps much more expensive). There are just two mounting alignments (portrait or landscape) and no angle adjustment (but I soon forgot to worry about that).
The memory slot is rear-mounted (for beauty?) and parallel to the case, hence a little bit fiddly for those with ten thumbs.
Mains powered, therefore not suitable for passing around the room.
If you like to click through your pictures rather than run them as a sequence then you'll need to practice with the buttons, but that is not exactly difficult....
I tried to make mine fail by loading a wide variety of pictures including 'bitmapped' files (the gadget likes 'JPEG' i.e. standard photo files) but to my surprise it coped with almost anything. The worst I could make happen is partial misframing, which occurred occasionally as the system did a mix transition between two pictures which were utterly mismatched in every parameter. Being somewhat techie myself I'm aware of the degree of difficulty it dealt with.
Good value and impressive performance in a neat package.
Incompatible with Samsung camera! May 12, 2008 Very disappointed with this... I wanted a frame that was very easy to use for my technophobe mother and, although the picture quality was very good, and the slideshow started straightaway, it was very slow and I had numerous problems. I was particularly keen on the auto-rotation feature - a previous reviewer said that it automatically recognised EXIF rotations. This didn't work at all. So I rotated them on the PC instead. More importantly however, these rotated images were shown as "invalid" when viewing the thumbnails. This is despite the fact that they were taken with a Samsung DSLR camera, and not modified at all other than rotating them. I then had more problems uploading images to the frame memory - it could only manage about 6 at a time before claiming that the memory was full (which it wasn't) I contacted Samsung technical support, who suggested I probably had a faulty item, so I returned it to Amazon and got a replacement. Exactly the same issues, so it was either from a faulty batch or the product is just not up to scratch. I then went a bought an 8" hi-res Jessops frame for less money and with more features which is fab (still meets the "switch on and it works straightaway" criterion, and it doesn't have a stupid logo on the front).
Good but slow menu navigation without a remote is a constant pain May 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have the SPF-72H and whilst that is merely a photo frame it is very easy to set up and as soon as you switch it on it automatically searches for your memory card and auto starts the slideshow. You are watching photos within 5 seconds of powering up.
I then bought the SPF-72V, as I thought having MP4 video playback would be a nice touch and also MP3 background music for the slideshows. Whilst all these functions work (eventually) it is very laborious getting to them. When you switch on you are taking to the home menu, where you have to use the annoying side buttons to toggle between PHOTOS, MOVIES, MUSIC, SETTINGS etc... then when you have selected the chosen media it then for some reason defaults to its internal memory, you then have to go into a different sub-menu to select play from memory card or USB stick, and at last you get to play your slideshow, video or music.
This wouldn't be as frustrating if it came with a remote control to navigate the onscreen menus but it doesn't and believe me using the side buttons is a pain as you have to lift up the frame and keep turning to make sure your hitting the right buttons whilst checking on screen at the same time.
On video playback I also could not find anywhere to forward/rewind the picture, as soon as you press the side buttons it starts from the beginning again! Arrghhh!
I have not used the Wi-Fi as I was not interested in this part so cannot comment there.
In conclusion a lovely looking well built frame, identical to the SPF-72H. If you soley want to view photos get the SPF-72H. If you want the extra functions then try the SPF-72V but I'll stick with my photo only 72H for now until Samsung come up with a much needed remote control function.
DONT UPGRADE FIRMWARE TO 1.011.2 !!!!!! February 5, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Excellent photo frame. Due to my fiddling intentions though - I looked up the latest firmware which promptly rendered it unusable. Off to samsung to be repaired at the moment.
While it worked -
The pictures were bright, colourful, and very sharp. It is very good resolution. The user interface could do with some work as it is not very intuitive, but for doing the job it was intended to do - it's great.
Especially like the automatic, timed on/off feature.
Very good frame .
SPF - 72V February 1, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
My Mum bought my sister one of these frames for her birthday, and while I am able to get a megadrive emulator running on my phone I am unable to get a sd memory card working on this frame. It promises fancy features but does not even deliver the basics. I have a top of the range computer and still after 2 hours have not got the supposed plug and play memory ard feature working. How Samsumg expects someone who is non Pc literate to get this working I do not know. Absolute garbage, buy at your own peril.
