5 out of 5 stars A great camera for a beginner   September 27, 2008

IF you really want to take some great photo's, but don't want to pay professional prices for a DSLR camera then this is the camera for you.

Having taken the time to read a few sections of the manual (how to use the manual settings) i quickly ignored all of it and just used the Auto modes (mainly Auto and landscape). I've taken this camera to Africa on safari, and taken some fantastic photo's and I truely am impressed with this camera and how good the pictures are.

Things I would suggest you also buy if you're buying this camera: -
1) A 58mm UV Filter/Lens protector - protects your lens and helps make your piccies look ace!
2) A Flash gun with a bounce head - got mine from jessops for 22 - really improves indoor flash photos.
3) a lense pen - big lense = lots of dust - get a lens pen or a blower to get it clean
4) 2500 mAh rechargeable batteries and a decent charger - this thing will munch through normal AA batteries.
5) the Big Fuji bag for this camera - I've got everything I need in it - and plenty of space for more!
6) a circular polarising filter for those out door sunny shots, shot through glass, and shots over water! makes them look ace

4 out of 5 stars Good rubust easy to use camera   September 23, 2008

I like it, good robust and easy to use camera

Quick to start-up, no electronic motorised lens, so you can use it immediately, fast zoom and focusing

excellent macro mode (butterflies a cinch)

photos a bit over exposed and harsh.
easy to set under -exposure that is remembered after power-off and warm up the photos by default too.

It will synch an external flash, so I use it with a big blinder hammer flash gun.
It does have a screw fitting shutter socket; so I can use a remote control

It does not come with any memory card, which is silly. But all manufacturers ever give you is a small one so its useless anyhow!

Buy a fast compact flash card (XD is dead) at the same time
and buy the faster type III or at least 160 x times speed 2 gb minimum
they are cheap now and it makes all the difference.

The vari-angle LCD panel is great for overhead crowd shots and floor level shots, just bend it so you can see.
However the best bit is the proper viewfinder, so you use it like a real SLR camera and great in daylight.

Can't change lenses? Quite honestly -its over rated for normal use -the supplied one does all the standard ranges you might need at less expense and the bother of carrying the damn extra lens around.
28mm to 300mm will do most everythings and it's an f2.8 lens, whereas most 300mm lenses are f4 and therefore darker.
Did i mention it has a standard tripod screw? very useful.

Very fast to download to a PC

5 out of 5 stars Supreme Compact Camera.   September 21, 2008

I have been using cameras for 30 years, switching to digital in 2001 with a simple Kodak 3400 with built in viewfinder.
I then purchased a Fuji Finepix S5000, which looked and felt like an SLR, but everything, including the zoom was battery powered and time consuming when in a hurry!

I decided to go back to a real D-SLR choosing a Nikon D40x but when I went to look at one for real, I fell instantly for the Fuji S9600 in the same display cabinet. Manual zoom means the the camera goes instantly into ready mode as it does not have to set up the lens using time and battery power. In my hands it felt solid and comfortable, giving access to all of the buttons and the control wheel, which are perfectly situated around the body. Manual exposure is a dream to use through the eyepiece; the extreme macro facitilty (1cm) gives amazing images of flowers and insects and the colour settings (through the menus) are impressive. Also, the camera has slots for both Fuji xD and common CF cards.

The down-sides to this camera are the eyepiece LCD display which is hard to use to focus manually; but the camera has a button which focuses instantly using the AF and motor. The focus ring is impossible to use manually, but I think it is redundant anyway. Night time photography is difficult as it is hard to get AF to work and harder to see the image clearly on the LCD screen.

Being retired and indulgent, I later purchased the Nikon D40x also, but if I am going out for a trip I take my Fuji S9600 rather than the Nikon, simply because it is so easy to use and I don't need to carry anything else. I use the Nikon when I am prepared to take the time needed to change lenses and use a tripod and set things up properly. A different story!

I would reccommend this camera to anyone who has some knowledge or interest in controlling their camera and feels they will use it to explore photography further.

4 out of 5 stars Broke after 4 months   September 3, 2008

The camera is pretty decent, but on the large size. Not good if you have small hands.

Unfortunately, mine broke after a few months. I think I may have inserted the memory card the wrong way round and something in the slot broke; did not use great force.

Now I am faced with a repair bill of 99.99. Beware.

OK so the good news is this huge spec, very high quality awesome beastie of a camera is under 200, the bad news is its a little large!!! LOL.
I can't see any problems with this camera at all, auto mode takes very good shots, it has all the usual bells and whistles, Burst mode, bracketing, sepia etc etc. All of the usual gubbins you'd expect on a top line semi pro camera. Add into that the magnificent Fujinon lens with manual zoom (which is so very much better than a power zoom). Its fast too, quick start up times fast focus generally brilliant. In response to other comments, I use a card reader to get the photos off the camera. The noise that has been reported certainly doesn't affect my cmaera, even on the highest ISO settings the noise isn't over wheat I'd expect. I love this camera, the quality of build and output is spot on. While I am sure that you can get better cameras, with the outlay for the body and lens I reckon you would be looking at over 600 to better this baby. Excellent camera.
