Product Description With this high-class digital camera, Nikon decided not to increase its impressive megapixel power but to bring together all the elements that make for a great camera! Here it is, the D40! The most compact digital camera ever developed by Nikon! The D40 is Nikon's first ever camera to offer all the advantages of the "Image Total Nikon" system thanks to its compatibility with Nikon AF-S lenses. More compact and lighter than its predecessor, the D40 has a 6-megapixel sensor and incorporates a 2.5" LCD screen for ease of use. Extremely fast and always ready to take photos, the D40 has a starting time of just 0.18 sec. This camera also has a continuous focusing mode of 2.5 photos per second, which is ideal for sports photographers! Supplied with an AF-S DX 18-55cm lens suitable for the most common photos, the D40 is also equipped with an EN-EL9 1000 mAh battery, which allows you to take 470 photos on one single battery charge. The D40 is without a doubt the wisest choice for all landscape lovers and photographers looking for a fun-to-use digital camera!

Best camera I've ever used! September 24, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first SLR camera and I've a huge interest in photography and I'm up for learning a lot of things about it, I've been recommended by many Nikon D40 owners I know, including online by research, and buying this has not made me regret it for one bit! I thoroughly recommend it. :)
Camera brilliant - Nikon cashback, not so great September 11, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love the camera. Simple to use and takes great snaps.
Just make sure if you get an additional lens with this as I did, that you get them through on the same transaction otherwise you'll only get 40 cash back not the 60. Just smarts a bit when you pay near 700 for kit that they leave such a bad taste in your mouth over 20. Makes you wonder what they're like to deal with as a company really. Hopefully I'll never have to.
Very Very Good and So Cheap 2 !! September 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Have had in the last 18 months a Sony A200,Olympus 410/420 a Nikon D70&D80 also tried out a Nikon D200 off a friend for a week. Decided after much thinking that the D80 was bigger then i wanted and the D40 with it,s great compact size and build might be better esp as so much cheaper as well ,The D40 is described 2 be better then the 40X and D60 due to the low light advantage and Flash Sync shutter speed advantage as well. Have had the D40 for about a month and it does 90% of what the D80 does and produces fantastic quality images that match the D80 up to very large prints and on my laptop for viewing without any difference. Don,t get me wrong i,ve loved the D80 but give me a D40 for 200 odd less and smaller more compact size and it,s a winner in my book, you could drop, smash have it nicked 3 times over almost for the same price as the D80. Cameras are being renewed every 18 months or so anyway so spend your money on quality optics and decent flash which are usefull for at least 10 yrs and keep there value well too. There,s a lot of features in the Sony,s and Olympus,s but i really don,t use them too be honest most of it is gimmicks that are not needed, Just get the Mega cheap D40 and get out there and take Pics with accurate metering, colours and low noise that produces better Images then the Olympus and Sony . Lastly sold the D80 and purchased a decent lens and SB400 Flash instead.
All round cracker September 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well I read the articles and wondered which camera to choose. Being on a budget did not know whether to go for a Sony 200k or Nikon D40. After looking at the picture quality on Amazon and google images and reading the endless articles I decided to buy the Nikon. Well have to say I has not disappointed. Its a level entry camera, its not a D80 and does not pretend to be one. I enjoy experimenting and can do this, my wife just wants to take pictures and can do this, my daughter has an interest and can take very good pictures, at the price you cannot ask for more. its designed to meet entry level wants and succeeds. it offers ease of use with the ability to experiment. It does not have bracketing, it does not have live preview but it is easy to use it does take fantastic pictures. An excellent introduction that meets the all the needs. if you are considering it, buy it. you will not be disapointed.
Fantastic SLR Camera August 16, 2008 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
In a layman's term, this D-SLR camera is almost identical (in term of features and picture quality) to any other Nikon Mid/professional D-SLR camera so I am not sure why Nikons are selling them so cheap - i am baffled! Unbelivebly, it's under 300.00 pounds and you can also claim 40.00 pounds cash back directly from Nikon. The other most important thing about this camera is that you can upgrade to an enhanced newer Nikkor AF lens later when your ready. so it's future proof by default.
The camera kit does not contain SD card so you'll need to buy one prior to receiving the camera. just get a 2GB SD from ebay or amazon for 5 (correct on Aug 2008). Also don't worry about SDHC as this camera uses an internal memory buffer to store the images before presisting it on the SD card. i managed 2.6 pics per/sec with continuous shooting.
The flash sync system used in this camera is same the pro Nikon (1500 >) DSLR camera.
The battery seems to lasts for ever. well literally. i think it's like 700 pics but i've been using for nearly 3 weeks and the charge is still full.
good luck.
