This is the one! September 28, 2008 This really is the one. If you're considering buying a camera like this, then forget about the others, this is the one to go for. It's extremely user-friendly, even for those who are not too hot with dials and settings etc., making it very easy to use in all concievable conditions. The picture quality is superb even when using the generous 18x zoom. (my photo of a lizard from about 12ft away looks like a picture from a National Geographic magazine)
I have taken my s8000 around Western Europe with me and the photographs which I have now loaded on to my PC are the best I've ever taken. Go for it!
I do have one gripe. You always have to carry a set of AA batteries around with you wherever you go, just in case the batteries go flat on you. They last for a good many pictures, but they will always go flat at the most inconvenient time, so you must be prepared. Why couldn't Fuji have designed the camera to operate on one of those flat lithium batteries? So much more convenient. C'est la vie.

I've had this camera since December 2007, and it's proved itself to be a worthwhile purchase. Downside first, no hotshoe, no RAW and longest exposure time is only 4 seconds, that's about it. The plus side is incredible. Proper wide angle to nearly 500mm provides you with brilliant photo opportunities, picture quality at least as good as you would expect at this price range, please remember it is not an SLR, nor does it have a sensor of SLR size, if you expect full sensor SLR image quality then you must increase you budget and buy one. I produce very good images upto 12 x 8 and am very happy with them. You can't be scared of menu options however, there are quite a few, but a lot of important options have quick access or dedicated buttons. Great being able to use my own AA rechargeable batteries, (2300AHrs) couple of hundred photos easy. IMPORTANT try not to use AUTO, it raises the ISO too high, and image quality suffers, best in low light,or parties etc, where getting the picture is more important that it's out right quality. PROGRAMME mode very usable with ISO 64. Happy Shooting.
Very good camera for a bargain price! August 2, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this camera as a step up from a normal compact. I'm very pleased with it. It has loads of good features and the zoom is excellent. I toyed with getting the 5800 but it doesn't have image stabilisation which I think is almost essential unless your a pro or using a tripod.
The pictures are very good but probably not excellent. But I don't think you could expect any better at this price. Some reviews have mentioned poor quality grainy pics - mine have been fine. Movie quality is also very impressive. Other reviews have suggested the camera is difficult to use. I couldn't disagree more. Given the amount of features available the menu systems couldn't be presented any easier. Also the manual is entirely in English (unlike some other reviewers).
If you're looking for a good quality, low cost camera that does a lot more than a compact then buy this camera. If you're looking for amazing picture quality and consider yourself a pro - don't buy it! (but you'll need to spend a heck of lot more than 140 quid!)
Biggest Mistake July 30, 2008 2 out of 19 found this review helpful
With specifications to that price , I was very much tempted and bought useless camera in my life. the picture quality is good but I couldnt escape the blur while taking the picture. I have been clicking 3-4 times to one gud picture.
Excellence from Fuji July 29, 2008 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I only got this on saturday as a replacement for my brilliant but ageing Konica Minolta Z2 (4Mp 10X Optical zoom). The camera is fantastic, it feels weighty, solid and balanced, the grip is ideal and everything is within easy reach. On saturday night I took over 350 photos with this and over 500 in total at a Blues festival, in comparison to the Z2 this is a different class, the sheer ability of that huge 18x lens is wonderful, the image stabilisation works like a charm. I found that the photos taken on 'auto' were perfectly acceptable and, after talking to a professional photographer, manual setting were easy to set and produced outstanding results. The photos I took were taken in a dark tent, pointing into the stage lighting and most of them came of far better than expected. I love this camera for is solid easy to use style and that monster of a lens (yes size does matter) if you don't want to pay over the odds for a lower spec SLR buy this, in fact buy this anyway! To those who marked down as they recieved a faulty one, grow up! it happens. And to the persone who complained of excessive noise at full zoom I haven't noticed any but I didn't use the digital zoom on top which will cause a degradation of picture quality. Great camera, my first from Fuji and I think I will be sticking with them.
