good camera May 20, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is my second review having withdrawn a somewhat negative 1st impressions one earlier. The quality of picture is good, even excellent and, although I haven't used it in very low light I have tested it in lowish mixed light conditions and it works well. Mine came with a 4gb SD card and I ordered an 8gb card which is necessary. The camera is simple to use and very light: I use a monopod with it to give it a bit more weight and stability as this could be a problem especially at longer focal lengths. It comes with HD Writer which allows you to store files on your hard drive - essential if you want to edit - and a sample copy of Pinnacle 11 which is pretty much rubbish. Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8, Platinum does a good job, but you need to transfer files via the camera to your Hard Disk for editing purposes. I found it almost impossible to save edits using the SD card and card reader, but others might find a way of doing this. One reviewer suggests you don't edit, but this is neccessary, to my mind, and important to the video process. It could be easier, but to be fair, all editing presents a problem until you work out how to use it properly and have a computer system capable of running the software. I would be happier if I could just plug it into editing applications I am familiar with, but it is a new system. The camera is handy, take anywhere without being an incumbrance, and easy to operate. It offers enough control, if you want to use it, to cope with a range of lighting conditions and produces sharp images from wide angle to 10x zoom. It comes with a remote so you can operate it without having to touch the controls and risk camera shake at the start and end of a recording. It is a good camera for family and holiday films and is capable of being used with good production in mind. It is not sophisticated, you can't plug in an additional mic or headphones, but the on board mic seems to work well with additional controls for zooming and wind. I like the convenience of not having to use tape and rolling back and forth to find bits of footage, so this is a definite plus. For its price it delivers good quality images that would cost very much more but for its simplicity and lean functionality. I like it.
Good Quality, Great Price May 20, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ordered mine in time for a week's trip to France and wanted something small and conveniently portable but with a good picture quality. I have not been disappointed. Contrary to previous reviews mine did arrive with a 4gb SDHC card included, which will allow 20 minutes recording in HD or 30 mins in Normal(still excellent quality). A fully charged battery normally allows c.100 minutes recording, the camera's display also shows how much recording time remains in relevent recording mode and battery time too, very useful. The size means that it is not a nuisance to carry around and therefore gets used. In terms of picture quality when played back on an HDTV it is great, but also great in standard modes. The sound is fine but wind noise can be a nuisance. At least an 8gb SDHC card is a minimum additional requirement I would say, but these can be bought sub 15 now. Also make sure you have a memory card reader that reads SDHC as my old card reader didnt, so I have also had to order a new card reader. In terms of transferring files to PC you will need a new/fast PC to make this feasibly useable. Videos can be transferred on to a standard dvd recorder but only in standard format, not HD, but still good quality in my opinion. In conclusion good quality, great price, there may be better(more expensive) or newer alternatives, but I for one am not disappointed with my purchase.
Superb and easy to use product April 23, 2008 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
This is amazing value and the picture equals that from cameras twice the price. The lack of a motor of any sort completely eliminates motor noise and it is small enough to fit in one hand. The picture quality for both still and HDTV is excellent and colour rendering is better than other cameras I have bought. The ability to take still photos while taking video is a bonus but isn't so good in dim light. Also, the flash is rather too bright for anything less than 2 metres away and cannot be controlled, so don't take flash photos of people just a metre away.
Two things are less than perfect for me: The joy-stick is a bit on the small size for my hands but other people find it easy to use. The need to connect the machine to the battery adaptor in order to download is baffling and makes it impossible to do where there is no mains supply. I also find the fade control awkward to set up, but this is common with other cameras I have used.
I don't know why they don't put the larger capacity battery in with this, although you get a couple of hours of general use from the one that is supplied. It is worth getting a spare battery (and a spare SD card).
I liked this camera so much I bought another 2.
Good little camera, excellent picture quality. April 4, 2008 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
For the price, this camera does what it says. Picture quality is excellent when viewed at full HD on HD tv, not tried viewing on normal TV. Sound is a little tinny when recording inside the house. Light is also an issue inside the house, but manual setting to adjust backlight makes up for this. Photos are good quality but flash is very very bright, even at 10 feet.
Be warned there is NO SD card in the box, had to wait a week before I could use this until I could source a resonabley priced sd card, found e buyer to offer best deal.
